Live chat wouldn't have to necessarily be hosted on filefreak, it could be a redirect or just a link leading to the chat room. (or just server info for IRC chat, like in JKE before)

Tbh it's only a little bit to do with technical limitations and almost entirely to do with ass-covering. If I ran any persistent apps through command line, I figure quite a bit of stuff would divebomb, and I probably wouldn't know how to sort it. /shrug
